Lisa believes that strong communication skills help students succeed in school and beyond. She is a professional writer, editor, and educator who is passionate about helping students become confident readers, writers, and thinkers. Lisa specializes in English language arts, including reading, writing, grammar, public speaking, comprehension, and literature. Her tutoring style is patient, encouraging, practical — and even fun.

Lisa earned her B.A. degree in English from Duke University and her M.A. degree in public relations from Rowan University, and she has taught English Composition at Rowan College of South Jersey. She also spent 14 years homeschooling her daughter and teaching students of all ages in co-op settings, giving her extensive experience working with students one-on-one and helping them grow as learners.

Lisa enjoys meeting students where they are, helping them organize their ideas, strengthen their skills, and build the confidence they need to thrive.

Born and raised in Gloucester County, NJ, I proudly identify as a husband, father, teacher, and coach. I was fortunate to learn from many great teachers as I worked toward my degrees in Psychology and English at Drew University and received additional Master's-level coursework in Education at Temple University. I have over 25 years of experience in Special Education in many different roles, including my current position in a local school district as a learning and behavior consultant. In that role I spend much of my time assessing students' functional and academic skills, training teachers and paraprofessionals in classroom management and crisis prevention, and working directly with teachers on curriculum and accessibility of learning materials. Some of my favorite things to do outside of the classroom are being a dad to an 11-year-old boy (and two cats), cooking, and gardening.

I am a dedicated K–8 tutor with over four years of experience helping students build confidence and succeed academically. I earned my Elementary Education degree from Rowan University and currently teach 4th Grade ELA in the Penns Grove-Carneys Point Regional School District. I am also a certified Mathematics specialist and work with K–10 math students.

I strive for a patient, supportive, and engaging teaching style. I work closely with students to strengthen foundational skills, improve academic performance, and foster a love of learning. I am passionate about creating ah-ha moments and uncovering each child’s unique needs to help them reach their full potential.

I am a 50 year old retired teacher who has lived in Washington Township for the past 47 years and worked in the district as well. My 22 years of teaching was mainly focused on first grade, with about five years of second. I earned my Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Rowan University in 1997, as well as a Master’s as a high performing teacher from Marygrove College in Michigan. I also earned a certificate as a “Teacher of Reading,” while at Rowan. My motto when it comes to teaching is that “all children can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way.”

Having recently relocated to Philadelphia, I bring a deep appreciation for learning and education to my work as a tutor. Inspired by exceptional teachers throughout my academic journey, I developed a calm, patient, and encouraging teaching style focused on making learning both engaging and enjoyable. I value curiosity and adapt lessons to fit different learning styles and each student’s individual needs.

I have tutored students of various ages and academic levels for many years. Beginning in high school, I helped peers with Writing and History, later mentoring a student with learning difficulties through SAT preparation. I also worked with learners of all ages through Ringle, teaching English to both children and adults, and served as a teaching assistant at Columbia University, where I led labs and discussion sections and graded assignments and exams.

Since then, I have continued tutoring through platforms like Varsity Tutors and Anacours, as well as through private instruction.

Outside of teaching, I am passionate about health and wellness and spending time FaceTiming with my family back in Maine

Rutgers University student Alex Young is currently in his third year majoring in Education with a minor in Mathematics. With over five years of tutoring experience, including three years with Sylvan Learning Center and two years through his high school honors program, Alex has developed a strong passion for helping kids build confidence and succeed academically in math and science.

​

Alex especially enjoys working with kids on the spectrum and plans to become a middle school teacher after graduation. Having been homeschooled and raised as one of five siblings - two with learning disabilities -  he values creativity, patience, and individualized learning approaches. Outside of academics, Alex enjoys hiking, camping, traveling, and spending time with his family playing board games.
